Skin type is an important characteristic for the correct cosmetological professional treatment and for the choosing home care products.

Also, it’s not a permanent aspect. Skin quality may change depends on age, habits, climate, life-style, DISEASES, HORMONES activity, pregnancy and other factors.

I’m sure, that all of you know such skin types as “dry”, “sensitive”, “oily”, “combination”. These four fundamental skin types were identified by Helena Rubinstein in 1915. For many years skin care cosmetics, professional treatments and home care products were made based on these skin types. In the last hundred years cosmetological industry was developed dramatically. The healthy, fresh looking skin without any signs of the ageing process became so popular that cosmetological market was growing in a huge industry just in a few years. Numerous researches on better understanding how skin works led cosmetic makers to the innovative technologies. Today we have different lasers, IPL technologies, injections and a new category of cosmetic products called “cosmeceuticals”, which can actually integrated into the deep layers of the skin and effect on its biologic functions.

While the skin care market was developed so much, the basic skin types were the same.

Yet, in practice, we don’t have one skin type, we all have mix and combinations of characteristics.

For example, one may have oily, sensitive, pigmented and wrinkled skin, therefore physician should find appropriate products and procedures considering all the needs of that specific skin.

There is the Baumann Skin Typing System, which I personally find very convenient. the classification is based on four main skin parameters:

    • Sensitive versus Resistant
    • Oily versus Dry
    • Pigmented versus Nonpigmented
    • Wrinkled versus Tight

Different combinations of this parameters define 16 skin types. For example, OSPW – Oily, sensitive, pigmented and wrinkled skin and so on. Moreover, each criteria can be rated with higher or lower points depends how strong it appears on the skin. It gives opportunity to identify the skin type more individual and prescribe the most suitable skin care products and procedures.

You should remember, that before buying or using any skin care products you should learn your skin type. Everyone can try to guess it, but only a consultation with a doctor or beautician will help to avoid mistakes. Only with sufficient analysis of the skin, one can define the skin type and provide the best treatment.

Nowadays, skin care it’s not just a cosmetology. Medicine, biology, chemistry, engineering and other industries are participating in the skin care products production process. Plus, marketing, advertising and all medias are part of the business. It’s not too bad, all these give highly competitive market.

Important thing is that you shouldn’t just trust the advertisements! Ask your doctor or beautician what is better for your skin.

Unfortunately, it may take time to find perfect skin care products, but once you’ll find, your skin will be very thankful.

With THE correct professional treatment and A REGULAR home care, the skin will be well-groomed, REVITALIsED, healthy and youthful for many years.
